Two days after a mysterious object streaked across the sky and caused a loud, thunder like boom over Kenya’s Rift Valley, there is still no information on what exactly it was. Speculation is rife that the object was most likely a meteorite.
No deaths have been reported from the explosion, but a child was injured when a fragment from the mystery object burnt down the family house.
The object streaked across the night sky at about 8pm local time on Thursday 27 February. Most sightings were in the central Rift Valley, around Baringo, Eldama Ravine, Kuresoi and Eldoret. This is the area where a loud explosion was heard. Eyewitnesses say the object produced intense light for approximately 20 seconds.
Sightings have also been reported from as far away as Embu, Nairobi, the Mara and Kisumu, though no sound was heard.
The Lunar Meteorite Hunters blog, which reports meteorite sightings across the world, confirms the incident. The blog has a map of reported sightings in Kenya accompanied by eye witness accounts from that night.
